Island anglers cash in on Pompy competition





 21 island anglers travelled to Portsmouth to fish the Alan’s Marine open pegged competition and took 4 of the 23 prizes. Sandown angler Damian Geldard landed a Bass of 5lb 5oz to take the first place prize of £1000 as well as £70 for the zone, £170 for the heaviest fish and £42 for the best Isle of Wight angler. The second place prize of £500 and a zone prize of £60 also went to an island angler; Gareth Croft who had a Bass that tipped the scales at 3lb 14oz. Daz Newland and Richard Smith received table prizes with 14th and 20th places respectively.

Western Wight AC



Jill Waterhouse and Richard Russell who both have represented England in competition, attended the Western Wight angling club presentation evening to present the awards. The fish of the year went to C Griffiths for a shore caught Tope of 42lb 8-1/2oz which took the Island record last August. Richard Smith was overall shore champion and Graham Cuff won the boat league as well as the Charter boat cup. Liz Cunningham was first lady and won the Skate cup with an Undulate Ray 17 lb 10oz. Matt Cassell won the junior league and Jade Goodall won the best junior specimen with a Flounder of 2lb 11oz. The best Flounder of the year went to Alan Bravery for a fish of 3lb 5-1/2oz and Pete Turner received two trophies for Bass of 15lb. Chris Kimber won the Sturgess Shield with a Gray Mullet of 6lb 9-1/2oz and Rob Turner picked up the Atkinson Conger trophy for his shore caught fish of 31lb 2-1/2oz.  The best of three awards for Bass went to Rod whitewood and Pete Bennett won the Red Lion trophy with a Smoothound of 15lb 15oz. The best Sole of the year went to Steve Barnaby for a fish of 4lb 1-1/2oz and P Newbery picked up two awards for a Brill of 6lb 10oz. Martin Butchers and Geoff Thorner shared the award for the best of three over 66% and Nigel Cunningham had the best Pouting at 2lb 4-1/2oz. The Bill Burt team award went to Daz Newland, Richard Smith, Gareth Croft and Bill Barnaby.  Newland and Croft also won the Oddy pairs trophy and Jack Smith won The Bill Raynor cup for the best bass by a junior with a fish of 3lb 9oz.

St Mary’s winners



This time of year is one of the busiest for angling clubs but instead of standing on the beaches catching fish its time to reward their efforts from 2007.  The last club to hold there Presentation evening was St Mary's Press Angling where Andy Wilkinson took the club championship and quarterly winners trophies. Wilkinson also picked up six other awards including a new club record for a Bream of 2lb 2oz. Pete Turner was runner-up in the championship, won the Four Seasons trophy, the Quarterly Best Specimen with a 11lb 2oz Smoothhound and had three new records including a Bass of 15lb. The Ladies Champion was Laura Cave and Jack Hibberd took the junior trophy.  Gavin Arnell was third in the league and picked up the Committee Trophy and a fish of the month for an Undulate Ray 11 lb 12oz.  Tony Simpson won the Pouting Cup and the best specimen shore with a Painted Ray 9lb 4oz.  Simon Dillon won two shore specimen awards and one boat for a Thornback Ray 13lb 14oz. The Pairs Competition winners were Keiron Arnell and Colin Phillips with 15lb 6-1/2oz combined weight and Phillips also won the trophies for the heaviest bag of the year, a new club record Conger of 20lb 6oz and the no bust trophy.  The Flounder cup went to Danny Siegal and Derek Arnell had a fish of the month with a Sole of 2lb 7oz. new club records also went to Albert Dillon with a trigger fish of 1lb 9oz and Keiron Arnell for a Bullhuss of 2lb 15oz.
