Island wide Marine.  Dyer also picked up £27 for the second best fish at 2lb 6-1/2oz. New Island Record

For many years Atherfield has been a favourite area for shore anglers producing some of the
Islands best specimens and now adding a new species to the record list. One Friday in sepember Chris Duff an engineer for GKN decided to spend the day at the beach and do a bit of spinning for Bass. Having lost a fish in the surf and then a lure he tried a Dexter wedge and was shocked when his lure was taken by a Rays Bream. The fish is common in southern European waters but less common to our seas so was taken to Island indentification officer Alan Bravery who verified the species and the weight of 3lb 10oz. Duff from Cowes was over the moon with his catch which has been submitted to the Isle of Wight division of the NFSA as a new record

Ventnor Junior Open

The sea wall from Ventnor to Bonchurch was overrun by young anglers last August when juniors ranging from 3 to 15 years old fished the Andy Manning memorial open hosted by Ventnor angling and social club.  Only one of the 45 entered did not register any fish with the best being 14 year old Matt Cassell who recorded 37 fish ended the day on a total of 641 points.  Matt was awarded the £75 first prize by the sponsor Cliff Williams of Contract Distribution Services and won the best over 12 prize. Daniel Farrow aged 11 had first pick of the table with 18 fish giving him 308 points and won the under 12 section as well as the top Ventnor member prize. 284 points gave 3 year old Jake Creaser third place and Lucy Geldard took fourth with 250 points and was top lady angler. The longest fish of the day was a Silver Eel of 38cm registered by 13 year old Abi Pluncknett who won a spinning rod donated by Nigel Johnson. All of the competitors received a prize from Trevor Manning who was representing Target Traces, Pure fishing and Scotties who also sponsored the event. 372 fish were recorded all of which were returned back to the sea
