IOW Angling Report 14th October 2007

One fish was all Rob Turner needed to take three of the pot prizes in the Western Wight AC open held last week. Turner returned a 31lb 2-1/2oz Conger Eel winning £250 sponsored by Contract Distribution services, £50 for the heaviest fish and the British Conger club tankard. Gareth Croft picked up £150 as runner up with 16lb 15-1/2oz and Paul Fincham had first pick of the prizes with 16lb 5oz. The best specimen prize of £100 and the Bass rod donated by Scotties went to R King with a Bass of 10lb 7-1/2oz and the second best was shared by Mick Young and Neil Cassford who both had a Dogfish of 1lb 9oz. Liz Cunningham was the pot lady with 4lb -1/2oz and Matt Cassell had another junior win with 13-1/2oz.  
Bembridge Angling Club
With the race to become club champion reduced to only two possible winners, a very disappointing below average entry of only 14 members fished Bembridge Angling Club’s recent catch & release competition. With fish hard to come by Stuart Newnham’s concerted efforts were rewarded by achieving first place with 11 points. Ross Staplehurst was second on 9 points whilst Geff Jones & Ray Lewis were joint third on 6. Mark Jones was relieved to gain fifth spot and in doing so, clinched the club championship.
St Mary’s Press
A 13lb 14oz mixed bag gave Simon Dillon first place in the clubs quarterly competition for October which included a nice 4lb 12oz cod and a bass of 5lb. Second was Keiron Arnell with a Bullhuss and a Pouting totaling 3lb 6oz and third was Gavin Arnell with two Pouting and a Dogfish totaling 3lb exactly. The best specimen fish also went to Gavin Arnell with his 1lb 12-1/2oz Dogfish.
Ventnor ASC
Karl Wager and I won the third leg of the fishing race last week with 33 points and I took the heaviest bag with 5lb 5-1/2oz.  Shaun Graham and Daz Newland were second with 21points and Tony Simpson and Gareth Butt took third with 17 points. The best fish of the night went to junior angler Katy Mitchell who returned a Bass of 2lb 12-3/4oz which also stands as the best by a junior member for 2007. The next club competition will be a boat fishing race this Sunday 21st fishing from 11am till 5pm.
Dinghy Open
This year’s event will take place on Sunday 28th October fishing from 9am until 3pm and the first prize of £150 has been sponsored by Rob Kitcher of IslandWide Marine. There are also prizes for the first and second best specimen as well as top junior and a drawn pairs sweep. The venues are river medina; Newport quay to east Cowes breakwater. River Yar; causeway to harbour bridge and Bembridge harbour; inside first groyne at harbour end of St Helens . The weigh ins will take place at Yarmouth quay, the folly inn and Bembridge outboards by 3:45pm also at Southern Vectis club Newport from 4pm till 4:30pm followed by the presentation. The entry fee of £10 includes the Sweeps and Drawn Pairs
Scotties & Ammo winter league
59 signed on for the first match held at Norton Wall with Sole and Pouting being the main catch. John Hardman won zone A with 2lb 1oz, Liz Cunningham was second with 1lb 8oz and Shaun Graham was third with 1lb 8oz. In zone B the weights were a bit better with Rob Turner taking first with 4lb 0-1/2oz. Garreth Croft was second with 3lb 4-1/2oz and Kevin Sampson was third with 3lb 11-1/2oz. The next leg will be on Tuesday 23rd at St Helens .

Isle of Wight Angling report

 

Telecom Sea angling club celebrated the end of their summer season last week with an awards ceremony and presentation evening. Chairman Mark Brooks and club sponsor Barneys Baits presented Rick Mabey with the summer league winners’ trophy and Sarah Mabey with the ladies trophy. Paul Brayford received the runner up award and Kay Salmon was second in the ladies. 10 year old Joe Salmon won the junior league and was also presented with £20 by Barney. The chairman’s cup sponsored by Holbrook removals went to Mark Brooks and Harry Holbrooks aged 10 took second place. The junior summer winners were Brandon Mabey and Kane Brookes.  Despite only having 23 members and still in there first year the club also rounded up an impressive amount of new and used fishing equipment for the people at Haylands Farm following an appeal by Jill Waterhouse who has been taking teaching groups fishing over the last few months. Jill was presented with the equipment by club members and sponsors who she thanked on behalf of all the students at Haylands. Jill also had a special thank you to Scotties, Martin of DARES, Barney of BTFC and Pamela Thomas owner of Temptress who has kindly allowed students to fish from her boat many times and has been very generous with tackle. The committee also thanked, UK Hooks, Telecom club, the Trophyman, Diamonds pet supplies, pride of Cowes , Blakes News, Shaun Graham and Struts property for all the help and support.  We are still looking for any tackle as well as trophies so if you can help contact any Telecom club, Western Wight, committee member or Scotties tackle.

 

St Marys Press

 

16 members fished the September championship competition which due to bad weather was changed to a rover. 13 weighed in a total of 36lb with Tony Smy taking top spot on a 10lb 3oz bag which included a nice 9lb 4oz specimen Painted Ray. Second with 5 pout and 6 silver eels weighing 7lb 7oz was Pete Turner who extends his lead in the table and third was Kris Renouf with 7 pout weighing 4lb 131/2oz. The next competition will be a quarterly on Friday 12th October which has been changed to the Back of the Wight from Rocken end to Freshwater Bay . Members are reminded that on the next committee meeting Wednesday 7th November the venues for 2008 will be arranged. If any of you have any suggestion then this is the time to have your say, so please come along to St Mary's social club at 7.30pm. Also advance warning of the clubs AGM to be held on December 5th, again at St Mary's social club at 7.30pm. There will be plenty to discuss including the election of officers where some top positions will be vacant, so please make a note in your diaries to attend.

 

Scotties & Ammo Baits winter league

 

The dates for this years league have been set with the first leg taking place on Thursday 11th October at Norton Wall. The following legs take place on Tuesday 16th October at Shanklin, Tuesday 23rd October at St Helens, Monday 12th November West Cowes, Tuesday 27th November at Brook and Tuesday 11th December at Fort Victoria . A full set of rules and sign on forms are available in tackle shops.

 

Western Wight AC

The club will be hosting the next open competition on Saturday 13th October with a top prize of £250 sponsored by Contract Distribution Services. Other prizes include £150 for runner up heaviest fish and specimen sweeps and a Bass rod donated by Scotties for the best Bass. Forms will be available in tackle shops from next week with information on the catch and release rules.
