Ventnor Angling and social club held their awards presentation last Saturday with 50 members and guests attending. Jason Warne was top trophy winner picking up thirteen individual awards and two team shields. Warne, a builder from upper Ventnor was boat league winner with 377 points and had the heaviest Bass from shore and boat with fish of 12lb 15oz and 7lb 8oz respectively. He also won awards for the heaviest conger, the second best Skate, four fish of the months and a new club record for a boat caught Sole and the Specimen Cup for best specimen of the year from boat. Picking up two team trophies with Jason for winning the fishing race shore and boat was Tony Burt who also received the Learner Shield, and the T Perkins Shield for Second place in boat League with 304 points. Burt also won the Burden Remnant Cup for heaviest flat fish from boat with a Plaice of 4lb 6oz, a fish of the month and a special award for his unorthodox use of a Dexter Wedge. The Waterhouse Cup was presented to 2006 shore champion Shaun Graham by chairman Garreth Butt along with the Mercury Cup as Christmas competition winner the Pleasurama cup for the three heaviest fish excluding conger the Williams Cup for heaviest Dogfish and the C Coleman Tankard for Most specimens over 50%. Graham also picked up a silver salver for his new shore caught club record Smoothound 10lb 7oz. Alan Bravery was also a big winner with eleven awards including the Blenheim Cup as runner up in the clubs Christmas competition, the Barlow Trophy for best specimen fish of the year for an excellent Flounder of 3lb 5-1/4oz, the Colin Wager Flounder Trophy for best three Flounders from the shore the A.J. Phillips Rose Bowl a fish of the month and two salvers for new club records. The top lady angler for 2006 was Debbie Burt taking the Ladies shore Shield with 40 points and two awards for a boat caught Dogfish of 2lb 4oz. Shore competition secretary Tony Simpson won the Brian Burford Cup for second place in Shore league with 116 points the Colin Wager Knockout trophy and the man of the north award. Bill Armstrong received the Ridges Cup for heaviest Wrasse in the Ventnor Area and two fish of the month awards and Richard Bravery won the Bannister Trophy for third place in shore league with 90 points.
Karl Wager picked up a new trophy named for his father Colin to celebrate his services to the club now he has retired from fishing for the best three Flounders from boat. I did manage to land a couple of fish myself last year and received awards for the Runner up Best Specimen with a Thick Lipped Mullet 5lb 10-1/4oz, the heaviest Wrasse from shore 2lb 2-1/2oz, two fish of the months, a new club record, the Ventnor boat float and the Collins groyne best bait award. Chairman, Garreth Butt won the Renta Welder Trophy for smallest weight in Competition and was presented with a barometer for services as chairman by the committee. The junior section was headed by Josh Perfect who won the league and received trophies for heaviest Pouting at 1lb 14-1/2oz the first and second best junior specimen fish and the heaviest Flat Fish awards as well as a new club record with a Rockling of 13-1/4oz. Ryan Bravery picked up a salver for a new junior record shore Black Bream and the triers trophy. A salver also went to his brother Jake for equalling the shore caught Corkwing Wrasse and Second and third place in the shore league went to Louis Graham and Daniel Farrow. Adam Warne received a fish of the month medal for his boat caught Dogfish of 1lb 15-1/2oz and a salver for a new boat record Corkwing Wrasse. After the main presentation the special and social awards were presented to Gwen Armstrong for services as treasurer and Alan Bravery for his work on open competitions. Clubman of the year went to Shaun Graham and services to the club went to myself and wife Christine and Tony Simpson and partner Angie. Christine and Garreth Butt were also awarded with trophies for going that extra yard helping in social events.
